System has one source component only

Sound poor on both channels

It is highly improbable that both speakers systems, or cables in both channels, would be defective simultaneously. These components can be ignored when both channels sound bad. Proceed as follows:

Sound system has integrated amplifier, and only one sound sound source:

Either source or amplifier may be defective. Refer to chart for that specific source. If unsuccessful finding the difficulty, substitute borrowed component or get outside help.

Sound system has separate preamp and power amplifier units, and only a phono source:

Source, preamp or power amp may be defective. Refer to CHART SEVEN. If unsuccessful finding the problem, substitute borrowed component or get outside help.

Sound system has separate preamp and power amplifier units, and a CD player, tuner or a tape player with built-in playback preamplifier (and volume controls):

Connect outputs of CD player, tuner, or tape player directly to the power amplifier inputs.

Sound OK:

System preamp is defective.

Sound still poor:

System preamp is OK. Either source or power amplifier is defective. Refer to chart for that specific source. If unsuccessful in tracking down the problem, substitute borrowed component or get outside help.
